A lot has happened since the 2020 WRA Breakfast Benefit. It was shortly after last year’s event that our worlds were turned upside down.
Like many of you, Whatcom Rowing has been battling through the impacts of COVID-19. Each day approaches us with new existential questions, and we remind ourselves that the rowing community and our collective passion gives us the strength to keep fighting, and to make mental and physical wellbeing a priority. This past year has come with a canceled spring season, team size restrictions, boat restrictions, regatta cancelations, and more. While we closed the boathouse this spring, the work did not stop.
The WA State response to COVID is ever-evolving, and WRA has shaped and reshaped the programming for juniors, masters, and learn to row. We have gone from 18 athletes: 1 coach to a much smaller ratio of 5 athletes to 1 coach. We have increased our inventory of singles to enable consistent & effective practices. We anticipate the changes will continue into 2021. The reality is, that these changes have a financial impact on the organization, and thanks to the hard work of our Board of Directors we have been able to make these changes without increasing dues.
Like most events, our annual fundraiser will be moving to a virtual format. We are adjusting to an evening Zoom event. Mark your calendars for Friday, February 26th at 7 pm. Now, more than ever, WRA needs your support to get through this trying time. Please purchase your ticket for the event below and hear from our membership how rowing has helped them through the pandemic. Those who register by February 12th will be entered to win a dinner at home from a local restaurant!
Every gift, large or small, will help to make sure WRA can continue low-cost programming well into the future. Thank you for investing in and helping WRA sustain a future for our community.
WRA is currently open with limited programming in accordance with WA State’s Phase 2 plan to reopening. Please visit the links below to read the detailed plan for new or returning rowers. Please use the quick links below to view our Covid-19 Programming.
Independent Adult Members (if interested) may self-select a double partner that they agree to row with.
Independent Members are only allowed ONE doubles partner at this time.
ALL members regardless of whether or not you are entering into a “Double Bubble” need to sign the COVID Participation Waiver and Sculling Protocols Agreement.
You will be prompted to enter the name of your 2x’s partner while filling out the agreement form.
You will receive confirmation that your Double Bubble has been approved once both rowers have completed the COVID Participation Waiver and Sculling Protocols Agreement.
It is critical that we have accurate records of when members are in the boathouse. This is already required when rowing without a coach but as a reminder: Whether you are rowing independently in a private boat, club boat, or in 2x you MUST sign in and out on the Sculling Logbook (located on the bulletin board).
2x rowers will need to use the reservation calendar, as with singles there are no “Drop-Ins” allowed at this time. 2x’s should default to red sculling oars as the others are rigged for 1x’s at this time. Coached programming is indicated on the reservation calendar to help with dock/equipment usage.
Please note additional protocols that need to be followed for ALL rowers utilizing the WRA boathouse listed in the agreement below.
ALL Rowers (parents/guardians) must complete the WRA COVID Participation Waiver and Sculling Protocol Agreement.
We are relying on your cooperation and adherence to the protocols listed above and in the agreement to keep everyone at WRA healthy and safe!
